Hair Loss Treatments to Support Thicker, Healthier Hair

Hair loss is a common medical condition that affects both men and women and can occur at any stage of life. While some degree of hair thinning is a normal part of ageing, excessive shedding or progressive hair loss may indicate an underlying condition requiring medical assessment and treatment.
At Geelong & Surfcoast Skin, every patient has an initial appointment with one of our doctors to establish an accurate diagnosis and identify any contributing factors. This consultation may include a detailed medical history, scalp examination and blood tests where appropriate.

Following assessment, we develop an individualised treatment plan based on the cause and severity of your hair loss. Depending on your diagnosis, treatment options may include home care, prescription topical therapies, oral medications, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, and scalp skin needling.
Hair loss FAQs:
Hair loss can occur for many reasons. The most common causes we see are male pattern hair loss, female pattern hair loss, and telogen effluvium. Other causes include iron deficiency, thyroid disorders, hormonal changes, autoimmune conditions, scalp inflammation, medications, and significant physical or emotional stress. A medical assessment helps determine the underlying cause.
Effective treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis. Different causes of hair loss require different treatments. Our doctors assess your scalp and hair loss pattern, review your medical history, and may recommend blood tests to identify contributing factors before developing a personalised treatment plan.
Depending on your symptoms and medical history, blood tests may be recommended to assess iron levels, thyroid function, vitamin deficiencies, hormonal factors, and other medical conditions that can contribute to hair loss.
PRP contains concentrated growth factors derived from your own blood. When injected into the scalp, these growth factors stimulate hair follicles, improve blood supply, and support healthier hair growth. PRP has been shown to improve hair density and thickness in appropriately selected patients.
Scalp skin needling involves creating controlled microscopic channels within the scalp to stimulate natural healing pathways and growth factors. It may also improve the absorption and effectiveness of topical treatments such as PRP. Clinical studies support its use in male and female pattern hair loss.
Suitability depends on the cause of your hair loss. PRP and scalp needling are commonly used for male and female pattern hair loss and may also be beneficial in selected cases of other hair loss conditions. Your doctor will discuss whether these treatments are appropriate for you.
PRP and skin needling treatments typically involves an initial series of three treatments performed approximately one month apart. Maintenance treatments are usually recommended every 6–12 months depending on your response and ongoing hair loss progression.
Many patients benefit from prescription topical or oral treatments as part of a comprehensive hair restoration plan. During your consultation, our doctors will discuss whether medication is appropriate for your diagnosis and treatment goals.
Hair growth is a gradual process. Most patients notice reduced shedding within the first few months, with improvements in hair density and thickness becoming more apparent after 3–6 months. Results continue to develop over time with ongoing treatment.
