Poikiloderma

Poikiloderma of Civette

Poikiloderma

Poikiloderma of Civette  is a common form of chronic sun damage affecting the sides of the neck and upper chest. It appears as a combination of redness, brown pigmentation and fine visible vessels, often with sparing under the chin.

Although harmless medically, it can be difficult to treat with skincare alone as the changes involve both pigment and superficial blood vessels.

At Geelong and Surfcoast Skin, our doctors and dermal therapist team assesses your skin and vascular features to determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

We use medical-grade vascular laser technology, including Cutera Excel V+, to target both redness and pigmentation. Treatment works by reducing visible vessels, improving uneven pigment and supporting collagen remodelling for overall skin quality.

Most patients require a series of treatments, with gradual and natural improvement.

Poikiloderma FAQs

Why do I have poikiloderma?

Fair-skinned, middle-aged females are most often affected by this condition, which is related to long-term sun damage and hormonal influences. It is caused by long-term sun exposure leading to changes in pigment, blood vessels and skin structure.

How do I know if laser treatment is suitable?

Our doctors will assess your skin and discuss whether vascular laser treatment is appropriate for your concerns.

What treatment is available?

Treatment typically involves a course of vascular laser sessions, combined with strict sun protection to maintain results.

Will it come back?

Without ongoing sun protection, poikiloderma can recur over time. Maintenance treatments may be recommended.

Geelong and Surfcoast Skin doctors provide comprehensive assessment and evidence-based treatment for vascular and sun-related skin concerns.
