Understanding the TGA Advertising Guidelines

In March 2024, the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) introduced updated advertising guidelines for the cosmetic industry to enhance consumer protection and ensure ethical marketing practices.

Under these regulations, it is prohibited to reference prescription medications in advertising, including cosmetic injectables such as botulinum toxin (e.g., Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) and dermal fillers, as they are classified as Schedule 4 substances. Previously, terms like “anti-wrinkle injections,” “cosmetic injectables,” and “dermal fillers” were commonly used, but these are no longer permitted in advertising materials.

Additionally, the use of before-and-after photos on websites and social media is now more restricted. Images must not make it obvious that a patient has undergone treatment with Schedule 4 substances, ensuring compliance with the revised advertising standards.
