Skin Treatments for Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition characterised by brown spots or patches that appear darker than the surrounding skin. It can present in several forms:
– sun-induced pigmentation (solar-lentigines or” age spots”)
– post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (from breakouts, waxing or skin injury)
– hormonal pigmentation (often triggered by pregnancy , the oral contraceptive pill or underlying health changes)

At Geelong & Surfcoast Skin, we take a clinical and investigative approach to understanding the cause of your pigmentation. A detailed consultation allows us to identify potential exacerbating factors before developing the most appropriate treatment plan.

Treatment plans may include chemical peels, skin needling, LED light therapy, and restorative medi-facials. Each plan is tailored to reduce inflammation, regulate pigment production and improve skin clarity.

Hormonal pigmentation, such as melasma, is persistent and complex requiring ongoing skin management and seasonal review. We always recommend an initial consultation to understand the treatment options and achievable results. Four weeks of at-home skin preparation is required before beginning active pigmentation treatments to ensure optimal safety and results.

Hyperpigmentation FAQs

How do I prep my skin prior to treatment?

Your skincare regimen must include daily application of pigment inhibitors, retinol, and SPF. We recommend this for a minimum of four weeks as this is an average skin cell cycle.

How long will it take to see results?

We anticipate seeing changes within four weeks of commencing your skin prep. However, more significant results are achieved from 3 months onwards with consistent treatments and at-home care.

When is the best time to treat my hyperpigmentaion

We recommend the cooler months when the sun is less intense and the social calendar is lighter.

How do I stop my hyperpigmentation from returning?

The best way is to avoid the initial and ongoing triggers. In  most cases, this is the sun (UVA and B radiation) and other sources of  heat (regular hot sweaty workouts, hot showers, saunas etc ). Daily application of SPF 30-50+sunscreen and wearing wide brimmed hats when outside is essential.

Can I combine this with other treatments?

Yes. We can address multiple concerns in a single treatment.
